Hey everyone, 

 

Thanks for visiting Mahina Kai Designs! I’m Kaylen, owner, designer and gold smith. I’m delighted to share my passion and craft with you.

 

I first fell in love with jewelry design and fabrication at Santa Cruz High School, in Santa Cruz, CA, where I was lucky enough to take a Jewelry and Metal Arts course that I ended up taking three, yes, threeee years in a row - I was that obsessed. To this day I wear the abalone and silver ring I made that first year. A love affair with fire, metal, and creativity was ignited. A few years later, I decided to take my passion and "hobby" to the next level, attending Revere Academy of Jewelry Arts in San Francisco, graduating as a Jewelry Technician in 2008. It was amazing to finally be immersed in the jewelry world, and learn from some of the best jewelers in the industry. After graduating I worked in Carmel, CA for Pat Areias making and repairing her beautiful works of Sterling silver belt buckles and jewelry.  A few years later, I relocated to Kauai, Hawaii. I was lucky enough to start working with Jim Saylor, an amazing jeweler and mentor, for invaluable hands-on experience in Fine Jewelry.

 

Growing up in Santa Cruz and now a long-time resident of Kauai, I've always drawn inspiration from the sea and moon. Which has ultimately given inspiration for the name, Mahina Kai Designs.
